It looks like they have recorded this for use in ITV drama "The Hack"

Oops, I must have missed that post first time round. Sorry.
I don't believe that Pulp would release a cover version as a single or album track. I think Candida talked about a potential EP in future so it may appear on that.

Mark was complaining in Sheffield about being asked to contribute song ideas and then them not being pursued.
I hope this will be available as a DL as I dont do vinyl

A thought I had earlier about this:
Does this mean they recorded The Man Comes Around, and then spruced these two demos up to be proper tracks in the studio with Jason Buckle in recent sessions? Or is it one properly recorded studio cover and just two demos?
Would be very interesting if they had gone back to these two tracks and fully recorded them. And maybe open the door to future stuff in this respect.

I take it to mean the Nick and Candy songs were demo'd with other More material before they started working with James Ford but not taken any further apart from the mixing by Jason. Jarvis told Hot Press in May that they only had one tune left over from the album sessions, he couldn't think of appropriate lyrics and felt it didn't suit the mood of the album.
Presumably The Man Comes Around was done "properly", ie not during a demo session and more recently. Around the time of the Red Rock gig where they were going to play it live?

Bit baffled at the late Feb release date, combined with the 'albums of the year edition' tag.
I used to buy some of the albums of the year bundles, with exclusive bonus discs, but they always come out in the run up to Christmas, i.e. now, not 3 months from now. Described as a 'festive bonus'... maybe the date's wrong.
Dread to think what I've spent on Pulp this year, and I haven't even seen them live.

Id imagine more people own record players now than have anything in their house that will still play a cd.
I bought More on cd as well as vinyl, but i barely remember cd singles existing for over a decade now. I lie actually - Bluetones have done a few recently, but that's the one exception i can think. After You never got a cd release other than the dj promo, and that was 13 years ago

Well its too bad really, people miss a lot of details, the streaming version does not even come close to the CD. So many bits cut even on the "lossless" version of apple music that's supposed to be like a CD.

Snap. Maybe CDs will come back, after all cassettes have, and that seemed vanishingly improbable. Can't see CD singles every returning though. Maybe (hopefully) people will turn away from streaming. I don't stream, but when visiting friends with TV streaming, the common habit of silently scrolling through loads and loads of stuff seems miserable, and little different psychologically from doom-scrolling. I'm told that music streaming services are getting clogged with AI pap, and we all know it doesn't work for for creators. I hope the whole thing collapses.

Have cassettes really come back? I imagine that they are just bought as souvenirs of a gig attended or a merch memento to support the artist and admire the artwork/read the lyrics, credits and liner notes if there are any.
And I imagine the same applies to the majority of CD and vinyl purchases. Streaming from your phone or laptop is just too easy to do.

I really dislike streaming. For me it completely takes the pleasure away from living with an album. Not to mention the soaring environmental costs, musicians I adore and want to keep making music not paid appropriately, not really wanting a machine to track my music listening and then have them recommend similar artists which I have no interest in listening to - just because I love the Cocteau Twins doesnt mean I want to listen to every single band doing their dream pop... its so passive - and of course the horrendous ethics of those pushing these platforms. I am so glad I got off them - not that I was really on them. I used to play Music Leagues and became quite obsessed. But I purchased a very impressive hifi player - not the crappy ones you get at JB Hifi - one from a proper Hihfi shop so had to endure through a hifi man's tech specs but its slowed my consumption back to where I enjoy music again. Not trying to keep up with every release. Love physical media. So I hope these new tracks make it across to CDs.

As with every human invention, streaming is being used the lazy and daft way. It's the equivalent of Youtube being used for cat and dance videos (when there are many content to learn new things).
I could only dream of having every song ever in my pocket when i was a teenager, it was very frustrating to not be able to buy every song from a band i love. Now it's all there, for very little money. It can be an incredible tool to discover new bands and let's be honest, test before buying the CD. Before that, we had listening booth in some music store. I use streaming exactly for that and also for bands who dont release their record on CD.
but they need to change the model. maybe raise the price a bit and include some kind of physical format along with it i dont know.
Streaming is not the problem, the people that make it and the people that use it are. It could be a tool to open your world to new horizon, but most use it to listen to **** autotuned music.

I had the opposite reaction. I listened to the Pulp one (which is fine). Then thought I'd go and discover the original, and didn't like the Johnny Cash at all. I've never got country music and that didn't convince me one bit.

Listened to the radio debut on Lauren Laverne this morning, she was very keen, but on first listen it was intriguing more than exciting. Will keep listening, sure it'll grow on me. Barely a song really, it's mostly spoken (what's the fancy word, something like sprechengesang?). Doesn't sound very Pulp-ish, or JARV IS-ish, reminded me of the Riton-Gucci Sound System 'Let's Stick Around' from a couple of years ago.
Jarvis is only 8 years younger than Cash was when he did his version, and he looked and seemed ancient.

Story behind the song. The director Lewis Arnold wanted the track covered by a British artist, and screenwriter Jack Thorne suggested Jarvis/Pulp.

Good point, I am also picking up a bit of Relaxed Muscle in there.
It's quite interesting how Jarvis' feelings towards cover versions have changed. I remember him saying during a Black Session once, something along the lines of "We're going to play a cover version because it's a condition of appearing on this show but I don't like doing them". Then of course they released a song called "Bad Cover Version". Did he mellow during his solo career when cover versions often featured in the live set?
__________________
Posted by Eamonn
He only played them live in 06/07 to pad-out the live set when promoting the debut solo, presumably cos he didn't have enough material to fill a set given he wasn't playing any Pulp songs.
But I guess in this instance he/they were asked to do it so it might have been a welcome distraction. He did Bela Lugosi's Dead with Jarv Is... too of course as a one-off for Halloween.

I never said (I was deep) that he disliked covers. Just that The Hack approached him. The director, who did the "controversial" Netflix show Adolescence this year, appeared on Question Time a couple of months ago saying Jarvis was his hero growing-up as a "weird kid".
I liked his vocals on the one he did of Chelsea Hotel for the Leonard Cohen tribute circa 2006 too.

Since we are talking about covers, it reminds me of a few songs Jarvis covered.
He sang Just What I Needed with The Strokes after Pulp's headline at Reading 2011. This one is great, Julian is louder than Jarvis tho. IMO, Jarvis's voice is too weak to sing like hard rock.
He also cover "Power of Love" and "If the Kids are United"

This is great cover, i love it, in fact i bought the album in 1997 just for that song. The wait for TIH was loooong.
Anyway, here is another cover great cover, the studio version of Paper Thin Hotel. Too bad it was never released.

It's interesting that of his two big heroes, Leonard and Scott, he covered the former more often. I was at the BBC Prom Scott Walker night in 2017. Jarvis did Plastic Palace People but unfortunately, next to stronger voices like John Grant that night, the inevitable comparisons didn't reflect great on Jarvis.
And of course at the 2000 Meltdown when Pulp hired Walker to produce WLL, Jarvis did tackle On Your Own Again saying that the original singer might want to leave the room! That was a decent effort. Scott's voice was liquid gold though, always s tricky one to emulate when you're doing a straight cover.

I guess that sums it up - Jarvis' range, and especially the very deep voice he has now, make Cohen covers straightforward; emulating the richness of Scott is challenging. With Cohen a stylist himself, and a lot semi-spoken, it's a good fit for Jarvis to give his own interpretations. Going to dig out my Brel stuff, and listen to them against Scott's versions, never actually tried that.

I have just had a listen to "Plastic Palace People" and I agree with you. I don't think he does an outright bad job of it but as you say, someone else who performed on that night may have been more appropriate. Strangely enough, I think that a cover of this song, with all its strings and backing vocals, would have fit in quite well on "More" (not that I'm advocating including cover versions on albums). There are a couple of other links to this song: Jarvis chose it for a NME compilation in the early 2000s (this is how I discovered Scott Walker) and he also made a video for it in 1989, a few seconds of which can be seen here (from 8 minutes):
He also performed a cover of "Cossacks Are" in 2008. I think that it works really well, almost the kind of song Pulp would perform in the mid-1980s that never made it onto an album (i.e. Nights of Suburbia / My First Wife v2 / Didn't Feel a Thing).
Finally, Jarvis performed "The Old Man's Back Again" with Air in 2010. It's an interesting version because it was given a more electronic feel by Air and, therefore, sounded a bit different to a straightforward Walker cover:

Interesting to read the credits lay-out on Pulp's page on Youtube for this song: the original Pulp members are labelled as "Associated Performer" while the extended five (Rich, Adam, Em, Jase and Andrew) are all referred to as "Studio Musician". That must be for royalties-related contracts? I thought the way everyone was credited on the album as being a writer showed that they are effectively a nine-piece now but maybe there is a distinction.

Nah, big bands like Pulp dont include new members like that all of a sudden. They probably have a very tight deal to reform and no way they will include "random" (sorry) new members. So yes there is a distinction.
Same for Oasis, only Liam and Noel are full "real" member of Oasis, Gem and Andy have different contract and they joined 26 years ago !
Jarvis has a two companies and the money probably goes through that
https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/12701359
https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/07562959
Same for Mark
https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/officers/liYHqdY2fgyiei5bNwVfWBbkewQ/appointments
And Candida
https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/07561140
and Nick
https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/07848933
All were created before the 2011 reunion, so I guess it was set in stone back then and won't change now, no matter who comes and go in the band. Its those 4 and that's it.

Spoiler
Man Comes Around we've already talked about it, I like it but it goes on a bit.
Marrying for Love reminds me a bit of Baby's Coming Back To Me from the first solo record, but more lively. Nice rattly percussion. Pretty straight love song.
Cold Call on the Hot Line - imagine if the talking bit in the middle of Ansaphone was a full song! Lovely bingo organ melody from Candida.
Two proper B-sides, like B-sides are meant to be. Pretty satisfied with that!
My copy has a nasty scratch at the end of side B, don't know if anyone else has that? No tote bag for me either!

The tote bag was one like the listening party ones - but claret and orange text. A really nice surprise was chuffed.
Does the bag say 'More. Pulp.'? Is so it sounds the same as the ones Bear Tree gave out with all the stuff Jarvis signed for them before Christmas?

Yes! That's it! One of those. Thanks - glad I've got a story behind it.
Was delighted with it!

I can't remember. Hopefully they will. I have been able to have a listen:
SpoilerI agree with Sturdy's points above. These are not singles or album tracks but traditional b-sides. They definitely wouldn't have fit on "More" but that's not a bad thing. I'd say "Marrying for Love" is my favourite out of the two, it has a nice 60s feel to it.

I have just attempted the lyrics for both on the wiki. Feel free to improve.

Mine came today, happily no scratches on either side (sorry to hear Sturdy got stiffed). Sadly, no tote bag here either - maybe those went to first comers (I'm usually late to these things, not being online daily; ordered mine 12th November)? The cardboard envelope thing is quite nice though, marking RT50, with a montage of classic albums, will have to find a way to repurpose it.
'The Man' is canny enough, and I'm very keen on 'Cold Call' with its echoes of Ansaphone, reminds me of something French I can't quite recall, but it's really charming me with its gently insistent synth riff. I'm underwhelmed by the drab fuzzy production on 'Marrying For Love' - quite flat and dull, arrangement gets a bit lost in the smog - but redeemed by an intriguing lyric, with lots more of those ****er references to religion.
Seems to be a set of two quite nice b-sides, and one lovely b-side. Though I'd much rather have had these out on proper releases of 'Tina' +/ 'GTHL'. Not that I'm complaining about getting another Pulp record in my hands BUT can't really fathom why they put this out. It's not like 'Stay Together' or 'Whatever', between albums classic single, where it is vital and urgent to get something into the ears of your fanbase.
With these three + Open Strings + Begging For Change, I guess we're close to having enough for a special edition of More? What else is in the vaults from More sessions, have we got it all now?

It's a shame that the B-sides aren't on streaming. Should we try to contact Rough Trade to see if they will address this? They seem to be shooting themselves in the foot considering the band's current popularity.

Sometimes vinyl or bonus material appear on streaming few days/weeks later. Its been the case for Blur on the last album, or The Waeve (rough trade) when they sweared the extra tracks wouldn't be available anywhere else and then it was.
I suppose they dont want to make vinyl buyers angry.

Yes, but it's easier to ripp the Japanese CD than a vinyl and there's probably more people on Soulseek who own the Japanese CD than the vinyl.

Actually the first version of Open Strings i found was the vinyl one, since it was released first. Its not rare to find vinyl rips on youtube or soulseek.
Only need one person, its not technically complicated now, if you got turntable that you can connect to a computer, its basically the same as ripping a CD. Most do nowadays

I've managed to record them, but the quality is really rather meh.
Not sure if it's the output from the player, the cable (USB B> USB A > USB C), or just because I'm recording through QuickTime not something like Audacity.

Why don't you try Audacity? It's free. But I'm not sure Audacity support USB input. I suppose you can't use stereo input with your record player?

Maybe It's recording via the Mic Line ?
You can also try Garageband if on Mac
If on PC, Audacity will do the job (on Mac too)
Step 1 Connect Everything
- Turntable Phono preamp (if needed)
- Phono preamp Audio interface (Line In)
- Audio interface Computer (USB)
If your turntable has
USB output, you can connect it directly to your computer.
Step 2 Set Up Audacity
- Open Audacity
- In the top toolbar:
- Set Audio Host to: MME (Windows) or Core Audio (Mac)
- Select your USB audio interface as Recording Device
- Set Recording Channels to 2 (Stereo)
- Set Project Rate (bottom left) to 44100 Hz
Step 3 Check Recording Level
- Click Monitoring (microphone meter)
- Play the loudest part of your vinyl
- Adjust input gain so peaks stay around -6 dB
Step 4 Record
- Click the red Record button
- Lower the needle onto the record
- Let it record the full side
- Click Stop when finished
Step 5 Clean Up (Optional but Recommended)
- Trim silence (Select Delete)
- Effect Normalize
- Effect Click Removal (for crackles)
- Effect Noise Reduction (if needed)
Keep it light dont overprocess.
Step 6 Export
- File Export
- Choose:
- WAV (best quality)
- FLAC (lossless + smaller)
- MP3 (smaller, compressed)
- Add track metadata if desired

It's definitely best if you can do a simple USB to USB. If you have to use a 3.5mm line out you can get hum.
Make sure the levels/volume in Audacity don't top out (start hitting the lines at the top), as that will give you distortion.
Personally I wouldn't worry about Wav vs Flac vs MP3 for something like this, you won't be able to tell the difference as long as the MP3 is at least 192 (320 to be safe).

Finally picked-up the vinyl from Rough Trade this afternoon.
Spoiler Enjoyed these - Marrying For Love seems an updating of sorts of Modern Marriage. The intro instrumental is a little reminiscent of Save The Whale by Jarv Is... albeit quicker. At times the lyrics are hurried to fit the lines. I quite like the calypso-esque rhythm. Chorus is near Jarvis' upper range, maybe could have been taken down a semi-tone or two. Enjoyed the repeated title line pay-off of the final part, strong melody and made me want to listen to the song again whereas I wasn't sure a minute earlier in the track.
Cold Call On The Hotline - wonderful to hear simple but nagging synth riffs pushed to the front of a Pulp song. Ansaphone is one of my favourite Pulp songs so this chimes quite nicely. The multi-tracked vocals and cheap keys backing of the chorus reminds me of Blur b-sides circa 1994/'95.
Lyrically, we know Jarvis is quite comfortable utilising double meanings, puns and wordplay. This is stretched across a whole song on this occasion. You could argue that such trickery makes the narrator come across as a clever-clogs rather than someone being emotionally direct and honest (I think the comic writers Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith can be guilty of similar in their Inside Number 9 - "ha ha, another witty pun or in-joke") but I think most of these do work in thw context of the entire lyrics.
Ultimately, they work best as B-sides, I can't see them striking the tone of most of the songs on More. But how wonderful to hear playful Pulp. I want MORE!

Cold Call On The Hotline skips during the instrumental bridge of my copy. Does anyone know if Rough Trade's exchange policy is worthwhile? I don't want to be returning, paying postage, waiting for a replacement which may have the same issue etc.

If there's no obvious crack, just play it through a few times or take it to your local record shop to be washed (they'll charge £1 or so to do that). Many new records just have a bit of manufacturing dust on them that can soon be cleaned off. Or use an anti-static cloth or brush
Some people will fit about this suggestion, but putting a 1p on your stylus (i.e. a bit of extra weight) for a play through can help get stubborn offending bits of dust out.

Cold Call... sounds like an outtake from This is Hardcore i'm loving it. Same warm sound.
Marrying... and i think someone said it earlier, sounds more like Jarv Is than Pulp. Feels more rushed with unpolished vocals, even unmixed or unfinished a bit but still a nice bside.
The Man Comes Around
Marrying...
Cold Call...
Begging for Changer
Open Strings
Nice batch of extra tracks. Now make that More Deluxe CD, Pulp, will ya :)

Yeah, was thinking about the live debut and when it was, looks like it was a month or so after the 3 days spent in the studio on the song with James Ford - the start of More before they did the whole album the following November.
This live version is a little tentative compared to how it sounds at a gig now, might just be confidence/practice rather than being informed by the studio recording.

James Ford is known for his atmospheric production. I dont think he drastically changed the song, but he gave it it's light and grandiose sound.
He has a way to make instrument breath on their own on his recordings. When over bands rely on compression, James Ford bets on space.

Marrying for Love is utterly gorgeous and would be one of the top 3 songs on the last album, if it was there. It's been on repeat all day. I'm proposing in a week's time, so I'll probably always associate this tune with this - whether it goes well or not! I'm pretty happy with that, either way.
Bit disappointed by Cold Call because the first time I listened I heard one lyric as "...I'm w*nking to a deadline" and thought it was brilliant and classic Jarvis. Was a bit gutted when I relistened and it's actually just "working".

Well for once i think track selection was pretty spot on for More
In the past Pulp or Jarvis made some questionnable choices (We Can Dance Again, some This is Hardcore Bsides, the whole We Love Life, One Man Show and Girls Like It Too on his solo album) but this time, right call.

Thoughts : These three tracks work really well together, blend nicely, and I'm happy that they're together in a neat little package.
"More" seemed very eclectic with a great disjoint between HnH/DC vs TiH eras. It very much felt like "here's a bunch of stuff we threw together into a bundle". Whereas these three tracks all have the same vibe.
Even though these are "The slower Pulp", I think that because they're all "The slower Pulp", together, my head seems to enjoy them more, whereas More.. .. I'm sorry, but I tend to stop it about halfway through.

Its the running order that is the issue on More
this is how i listen to it, first part very fast and punchy, second more mellow
01. Spike Island
- I add After You here, it fits well
02. Tina
03. Grown Ups
04. Got To Have Love
05. Slow Jam
06. My Sex
07. Background Noise
08. Partial Eclipse
09. The Hymn of the North
10. Farmers Market
11. A Sunset

Pulp is the only band i can think of (bar Maybe Divine Comedy) that i can think of that sounds as good at 60 compared to when they were in their prime. Their return is truly spectacular. The EP and Begging for Change are just incredible extra tracks.
On another note, i just realized Marrying for Love sounds a bit like an outtake from Foxygen's We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic album. Same vibe.

It's tricky - the pacing of albums. Do you put all the slow/mellow ones together ie like Andy's above? It provides smooth sequencing but puts some people off as there are too many slowies together and as some of the comments above/elsewhere have said, they lose interest in More halway through (I don't as I think the quality of the lower-tempo songs on More Side B is really strong).
But then, if you mixed them with the quicker ones throughout the album, it might be jarring. What's the answer? One album of Slow Pulp and one album of Faster Pulp? As the group are older, slow seems the logical way to go. We should be having us a slow jam anyway as it's the best thing they've written since the 90s

What i like about my tracklisting is precisely that : you got a strong powerful start, and then slowly fades and goes into mellower territories. That's how most of my days go, i dont know for this record it seems to fit, as the songs are too different to go fast/slow/middle/fast/slow. It's been almost a year now and ive never gone back to the original tracklisting.

I agree about Suede. Ride are actually better than they ever were (Weather Diaries is better than Nowhere). James (All The Colours Of You) and the Cure (Songs Of A Lost World) still both hit near their very best. Even Blur - I preferred Ballad of Darren to all their albums bar Modern Life Is Rubbish

The last Blur has its moment but overall i found it very tired and too many slow song heavy. Like if Pulp had released Spike Island and then 10 partial eclipse. It's still an enjoyable album but to me they've done way better in their prime. Still it's a band that can be on top again. Coxon is doing an amazing solo career, lastly with the Waeve.
As for the other, same as Suede, not my cup of tea so i cant really be a judge.

I think the thing with Blur is that their 'classic' albums were always really patchy. End Of A Century, To The End, This Is A Low, The Universal, Beetlebum combined would make up the bulk of a great album. But the rest of those three albums those is all quite disposable. On Ballard of Darren I thought there were 3 or 4 strong tracks, which is a better hit rate than anything of theirs since Modern Life.

Ballad of Darren is, for me, that rare perfect album, even if you add on the three bonus tracks.

I always thought that the "Big 3" Blur albums were too long, a couple of songs from each could have been B-sides. I think that "The Ballad of Darren" is too short, I don't think that the bonus tracks would have fit in well but there are a couple of existing album tracks that could have been extended slightly. The arrangements are great but even when I listen now, I think "Is that it?".

Yeah, so back to the B-Sides. Anyone get a bang of Forever In My Dreams off of Married For Love? Musically l, mean. Lyrically it treads similar ground. I guess Forever was for Camille, the new one for Kim.

I think Blur as a whole is much for casual listeners. You either dig the style or dont, there is no middle ground. I personally think those albums are great but i totally understand that their music cant be like by everyone. I even love their b sides.

Ballad of Darren is, for me, that rare perfect album, even if you add on the three bonus tracks.
Oh yes, the 3 bonus tracks deserved a spot on the record, instead of other especially The Swan, which is the best ballad Damon has written since the 90s.
I prefered when Blur was ****y, ironic and witty, they perfectly described the 90s in their song, just like Pulp or Oasis, but in a different way. Ever since Damon entered his moody phase (Think Tank, although it's a good album) I'm less in it, although i enjoy those albums too.

So now I've had a listen a few times, I really like "Marrying for Love". I agree that it's like a better version of "Baby's Coming Back to Me" and yes, I'd say that there is a hint of "Forever in my Dreams" in there plus a very small trace of "Background Noise".
"Cold Call on the Hotline" is quite interesting, it is as if they have taken one of the ideas that cropped up in "Ansaphone" and turned it into a full song. It works.
I don't think that either of these would have fit in well on the album but they are a great pair of B-sides. I remember the relief of actually getting proper B-sides to "Bad Cover Version" and now that singles are a lot different to how they used to be, it's great to have these released.

I still remember the horror of hearing That Boy's Evil for the first time... did I really pay that much money for a remix and this instrumental repetitive excuse for a song? oh, the disappointment... :)

Good times.

Yeah that was the time record label went too far with CD1 and CD2 singles with pointless remixes. Who could buy all of these ? I did, but only if there was a new bside on the CD and not just remixes.
That Boy's Evil is fun. It's just a bside so that's fine.

I'm not sure it's really a "Pulp" track though - they're all credited but it's really Jarvis and Steve mucking-about, learning to DJ, isn't it ?

A Pulp track is a track where Jarvis is involved I suppose. Same for the James Bond track, All Time High, it was Jarvis, Mark and Steve only i think, and its labelled as Pulp.

Sure but Evil is based on samples and loops. It's a dance track, are Nick, Mark and Candy even playing on it?

How about Got to Have Love then ? It's also a sample on the chorus Like the song does not even exists without the sample.

Yes but it was made into a song that all the band perform on. It's not a Smackey and ****er DJ-production.

To me Pulp was always a pretty loose concept, with people coming and going, and Jarvis as the only compulsory member.
So if there is no Mark or Candida, it could still be labelled as Pulp (i guess with their blessing though)
Could be wrong though.

I strongly doubt that "That Boy's Evil" was ever conceived as a full Pulp song. I got a copy of the Chocolate Layers 12" and some of the guitars sounded a bit louder but that's likely because I was listening on vinyl not CD. As the "A Little Soul" single was never released on vinyl, I am unable to do a back-to-back comparison.
The 2 CD rule was a good marketing technique and believe it or not, there was a market for the seemingly never-ending supply of remixes. I always bought both CDs if it was one of my favourite bands but for anyone else, I bought the one with proper B-sides. Fortunately, some bands (namely Suede and Mansun) would release B-sides on both CDs which was a plus. But then, it did allow for the reverse to happen (see "The Trees / Sunrise" or "Coffee and TV" by Blur).

Slow Jam really muddied the waters of what is a Pulp song for me, it seems very likely that most of us on here heard the song long before most of the core Pulp members did, is it a Pulp song or a cover of a Jarv Is song?

Think you're right about us knowing it before 3/4s of Pulp but it's the final iteration of a Jarv Is... song. There's so many brilliant overdubs that add to the final version ( including what Mark, Candida and the Elysians play) and an explosive final chorus that it feels a bit unfair to call it purely Jarv Is.

Theres something to be said for a cover version that surpasses the original. I dont know if it can truly be called a cover version if its being sung by the person who wrote it, its an interesting situation to debate though.

I have never ever liked a remix by any of my favorite bands, ever. It's usually the same formula: make it 7 mins long, add stupid instruments and repeat vocals bits over and over again with echo or a weird noise. It's cheap to make and not interesting at all. I never got the point of it, bar, selling more records when people where buying records.
I would rather have demos than remixes, they were far more interesting, at least from a musician point of view.

The live Jarv Is... version is more tentative because it's new and unfinished sounding. Pulp and Jarv Is... completed it together. That plus the fact Jarvis is the main common denominator means I would never see it as a "cover" even though there are parts on the live Jarv Is... version that I prefer.

I agree Andy, most remixes are a waste of time. I think the artists like them because their ego is stroked by another artist wanting to work on their creation.
When I listen to remixes these days, unless the remixer has made an interesting groove or looped part that works in repetition, the main thing I listen out is for isolated/new vocal and instrumental bits that have been buried on the original.

I generally agree with you. I've been racking my brain for a decent remix, just for curiosity. The only ones I can come up with are:
- Union of Knives with Helen Marnie - A Tall Tale. I think the remix that was a bside or mailing list bonus well exceeded the original
- Bowie & Queen - Under Pressure. The remix for the film Aftersun took that song to a whole new level

I have just remembered: apparently "Something Changed" started its life as a Saskia C0cker solo demo (https://pulpwiki.net/Jarvis/OtherMusicalProjects#Saskia****erDemo) in 1984 though it did feature Jarvis on guitar. So none of us have heard it and the chances are it was never performed live at the time but are the waters muddied there as well?
For me, it is clear that the other members brought something to "Slow Jam" so I class it as a Pulp song. The Jarv Is version was likely never finished.
As for remixes, I like about 10% of them; the Motiv-8 ones were decent enough and those two that appeared on "The Trees" and "Sunrise" CDs weren't bad, although nowhere near as good as proper B-sides.

But isn't Jarv Is just Pulp without the Pulp members that did not want to be in music back then ?
Its always been very vague what Pulp is and isn't. Many personnel change over the years, Jarvis could just have named the Jarv Is records Pulp, It happened before with other bands.
but I guess he respects his bandmate too much.

Even in the latter days ? Didn't Jarvis bring more or less fully written songs for the others to add bits ? Wasn't it mostly a bit like that for More as well ?

I loved the Swedish Erotica mix of This Is Hardcore, by Tipsy, though its a stretch to call it a remix. Agree that Pulp remixes are generally disappointing and superfluous.

The only ones I tend to listen to are:
My Lighthouse (single version)
Countdown (single version)
My Legendary Girlfriend (Caff single version)
Common People (Motiv 8 Club remix)
Disco 2000 (7" version)
Disco 2000 (Motiv 8 Discoid remix)
Party Hard (single version)
Party Hard (Chocolate Layers remix)
Party Hard (Christopher Just remix, it's fun every now and then!)
So the bulk of these don't deviate too far from the original versions. I was always more interested in B-sides to be fair.

Do they count as remixes though ? They are alternate mix from the band, so to me, not remixes
But i agree, bsides are always more interesting. Remix is a weird (and to me kinda lazy) genre, because with tools now, even 20 /30 years ago, you can do 100 remixes by randomly cutting and pasting putting bits here and there and it will do something listenable. Its the equivalent of throwing a bag of spaghetti on the floor to me. There's always gonna be something that will come out of it.
