A few years ago when it came out, I leafed through the autobiography of veteran Irish radio DJ/music and film critic, Dave Fanning.
One of the interesting stories was his role in deciding who won the 1994 Mercury Music Prize. He had the casting vote as you can see from the attachment... (Read them in reverse order, I can't seem to edit them).
I never bought the book but noticed it was £0.99 on Amazon/Kindle the other day so thought it worth purchasing and sharing the relevant part for my Bar Italian brethren.
If he had gone with his true feelings and His'n'Hers had won... would things have changed materially for Pulp? Maybe Island would have wanted to piggyback on the high profile and release another single from the album (Pink Glove?). Would they have still supported Blur on the imminent tour of the US? Would their UK tour/support of Blur in October have been upgraded to bigger venues? Maybe nothing would have changed....did it for M People?
But from a wider lens/butterfly effect etc. - any additional promotional activity Pulp would have been asked to undertake, could have altered the frenzied creation of Different Class and maybe some of its songs would never have got written. I'm not suggesting Jarvis plays Marty McFly in a Back To The Future reboot directed by Wes Anderson but it does make you wonder...
And if Fanning thought HnH contained filler (you leave Someone Like The Moon and David's Last Summer alone!!) and genuinely did think Pulp's best/most commercial work was ahead of them, maybe he had his own crystal ball powers...
