Sad news the other day - Paul Jackson, owner of the Adelphi in Hull since the mid '80s, has died after a short battle with cancer. Pulp played the Adelphi countless times from '85 to '92 - probably more than any venue other than maybe the Leadmill.

Don't think I've seen any photos of Pulp playing there but here's one of a certain Housemartins bassist in early 1986...

Seems like he was a great character who did so much for live music. Is he the same fella whose dog Jarvis namechecked at a Pulp gig at Hull arena when they'd made it big?

Yep. Yosser!

I've spent longer than is reasonable poking around the Adelphi website / the Internet in general trying to find traces of the date Pulp played there so ended up knowing more about the place than someone who's never been their ought to. (Still can't confirm one date - the late November 86 one, Nick's first gig. If anyone can find out, apply within!)

Steve Lamacq has got Paul Heaton on tonight (Monday):

"Paul Heaton reflects on the passing of Paul Jackson who ran the Hull Adelphi since 1984. The venue was the centre of Hull's music scene and hosted dozens of bands including The Housemartins, Pulp and Oasis. As Paul tells Steve - "Every city had a club like the Adelphi, but no city had someone like Paul Jackson." "

Thought Jarvis might have mentioned it during his 6Music show which returned yesterday. Maybe it was a pre-record. Was also surprised he didn't have an 'On This Day' reference or play of Talk Talk's "April 5th" track given the day that was in it, plus its parent album has just turned 40.

Must do better but I'm sure he will after shaking off his presenting cobwebs in the coming weeks.
